A genuine grand historical parade
400th anniversary

To remind us of the attempt by the troops of Duke Charles Emmanuel 1st of Savoy to invade the City of Geneva, a 16th century atmosphere is created every year around the 12th December on the old town's roads and especially on the hill of St. Pierre. Unique and really extraordinary.

The Escalade is one of the most beautiful historical celebrations in Europe. Its organisation is assured by a group of passionate volunteers: the Compagnie of 1602. With its 2,500 members, it was founded in l926 in order to perpetuate the commemoration of the events of the Escalade. All of the effects, costumes, weapons and accessories belong to the Compagnie, which manages and self-finances all of the activities.

Every year, more than 80,000 spectators come to assist in the reconstitution of the event. Not less than 700 participants in historic costumes animate the weekend, which always takes place around the 12th December. An imposing cavalry, 50 riders and about ten horses with carts, as well as groups of armed men, devote themselves to this unique event.
Stalls and markets are set up along the route, a festive mood is in the air and the people from Geneva participate with enthusiasm. A memorable reconstruction in a genuine atmosphere, which a great number of people from all around the world do not want to miss by any means.

The historic background
In 1602, the Duke of Savoy, Charles Emmanuel 1st, had his eye on Geneva, whilst aspiring to the throne of France. These aggressive intentions, lead the French sovereign Henry 4th, to infringe the peace agreement.
Thus, "in the first hours of December 12th, 1602 a gunshot was heard. The entire enemy army rushed towards the wall of the city of Geneva, intent upon its devastation. The alarm bells and the cathedral bell called the local people to take to arms and after only one night of battle, the people from Geneva were victorious!"

A magnificent anniversary
In order to celebrate with dignity the 400th anniversary of the Escalade, the Compagnie of 1602 has decided to plan long-lasting festivities. In fact, they will last from June 1st to December 15th, 2002. An official opening day will be held, with representatives from all the Swiss cantons, as well as popular fairs, balls, concerts and other musical programmes. The famous Escalade figures, "Mère Royaume" and the Duke Charles, will be at the head of the events...

The commemorations will be celebrated under the eyes of the Reformers, from Port-Noir to the Bastion gardens, and throughout the town. Until December 2002, the popular celebrations will continue in an historic and fun-loving manner, which will not forget any messages with cultural connotations... Following in the footsteps of all the admirable volunteers of all age groups, of all origins without any religious or political distinction... the 400th anniversary of the Escalade will be dedicated to each and everyone. This is an important Federation event, which should not be missed.
